New Year's Eve, II: Dessert at The Broadway Oyster Bar

In keeping with our "No Fancy Pants Restaurants" theme, we declared our New Year's Eve "dessert" to be: raw oysters. Well, 3 of us declared that; 1 of us—her initials are Jennifer—decided to "skip" dessert.

Where else to get Raw Oysters, but New Orleans?

Er, well, just down the road from it.

Actually, the second leg of our evening found us at The Broadway Oyster Bar, in St. Louis.

Another "neighborhood joint," this place also had great food and a LOT of atmosphere! They were friendly:

And encouraged us to be:

Before we get to the actual food, I'll just toss out that the restrooms were interesting here also:

Mosaic mirrors in the ladies room. Oops! If you look carefully, you can see my butt in this photo.

Not really.

Exotic scene behind the toity:

Restroom graffiti reads, "If it has tires or testicles, it's gonna give you trouble."

That unisex bathroom really threw people for a loop. The men were hesitant to use it, and the women refused altogether, preferring to wait out the ladies.

Enough about the bathrooms, already, geez. We really were there for the oysters.

I was pretty sure that I liked them, even though I can't remember ever eating one. We ordered a dozen to split.

Bill gave us guidelines: Scoop it onto a saltine, slather on some cocktail sauce and horseradish. Clint went first. He was smiling as much after this bite as he was before, so I guess he liked them.

I tried one Bill's way, and then straight out of the shell. Pinkies Up, that is The Proper Way to eat a raw oyster. So says I.

Fair warning: Go easy on the horseradish...

Final Concensus: While 1/4 of our party would have nothing to do with them, 3/4 of our party loved the raw oysters.

Speaking for myself, they are my new favorite dessert. I would choose raw oysters over Death by Chocolate any day of the week.

I just read over the online menu, and see that they serve a lot of other cajun fare, including crawfish, beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, and voodoo wings. Aurgh, I'm already paralyzed with indecision about what I'll order when we go back.

And we will be going back.

  5. I never thought about going to St. Louis one way or another. Now? Now I have to put it on my list. Thanks. 'Cause that list isn't nearly long enough yet or anything.

  9. Our cajun restaurant here is Razzoo's. My favorite thing is the rat toes. I checked out your menu and they didn't have rat toes, but lots of other good things. It looks like you guys had fun.

I loves me some oysters on the half shell! Having said that, now I have to admit eating raw oysters in Arizona is scary, like how "fresh" are they really?

  16. We did fresh North Carolina oysters for both Thanksgiving and Christmas this year and it was awesome. Shucked 'em myself (with only a slight flesh wound resulting).

I prefer to skip the crackers and shrimp sauce, and instead opt for a squeeze of lemon and a hit of tabasco and slide it down the hatch. Shooters (in vodka and a splash of bloody mary mix, not budweiser, preferrably) are fun too. Later I usually end up eating the shrimp sauce over crackers and cream cheese. Mmmmmm!

  18. No horseradish for me. Straight up please and really cold. Hey if you ever used a unisex bathroom in Italy then that one would be tame. I mean when they say unisex they mean it. Nothing like sitting down next to a lady and well you know. Walls would be nice. Ewwwwwwww.
