Scents and Scentsability

Calvin Klein, "Truth." When I wear perfume, that's my scent. I have a tendency to stick to one scent for years, and then tire of it. Liz Claiborne "Realities" was what I wore before I switched to this one, about 8 years ago.

I've lately decided that it's time for a change, again. Knowing this, for Christmas, Clint gave me a home-made coupon for a bottle of perfume, the scent of my choice.

The problem is, nothing's grabbing me. I have to love the scent I'm wearing, or honestly, I'll never put it on. I make pit-stops in the Macy's perfume section, choose one that might be tolerable, spritz on the tester, and wear it for an evening. That which I think I like, I do not, after 20 minutes.

I tear the perfume samples out of tawdry Glamour magazines, and try them on. I thought I'd found one: Tommy Hilfiger's "Dreaming." It smelled pretty nice, I thought, after I'd rubbed the page on my wrists. But this evening I spritzed on the sampler, and disliked it immediately. It smacked of "White Shoulders." I like White Shoulders, but if I wanted to wear White Shoulders, I'd buy White Shoulders. So, Dreaming's out.

I also like Ralph Lauren's "Romance," but that's Diane's signature scent. I'd just walk around thinking "man, I smell good; I smell just like Diane." Anyway, you can't steal your friend's signature scents.

Maybe you can help me out: I like spicy, almost masculine scents. Clean, but not too soapy. Something reminiscent of sandalwood, perhaps. I don't want anything fruity: no coconut perfume for me! And nothing too floral, I generally find them too strong. I took a whiff of something called "Picaso" today and nearly keeled over. I've no interest in smelling like a little old lady's compact face powder, circa 1917.

Any suggestions? What do you wear?

  1. Bulgari (BVLGARI) Tea Tree scent. I relaly like it and like you, do not like anything too sweet, flowery (makes me wheeze!) or even fruity. I like CLEAN smelling scents.

Anyway, other than the Charlie my high school bf gave me, a bad dose of CK Obsession in university, I haven't ever really worn too much perfume. I don't wear this every day, but when I do, that's what I use.

Lemme know what you end up with!

  2. Check out Samsara or Philosophy's Grace. I can't wear Samsara for the same reason you can't wear Romance ~ it's a friend's signature. Grace doesn't do well with my body chemistry. HOWEVER ~ Samsara is musky and rich and reminds me of the Medina. Grace is clean and sharp (to the point that some people really don't like it) and smells really nice on the right person.

Of course, this and a buck fifty...

I personally wear Bond Fire Island (hard to find) and I am loving Michael Kors right now too. I also like a few Hermes scents (Eau des Merveilles) and the entire line of BVLGARI Omnia.

  5. Sigh, I don't wear cologne - but one of my friends had this cool new perfume that is exactly as you described - uh, except that, uh, I forgot what it was. And, I, uh, forgot which friend. But I'll let you know...

  7. I think I am one of a few left still addicted to "Realities". I am forever e-Baying or shopping TJ Maxx for bottles, since the original scent is no longer available. (the orange bag, turquoise cap)

I'll have to check back here to see others suggestions, as it is getting harder and harder to find.

  8. Browse around on Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and buy some imp's ears of whatever sounds intriguing.

  9. I don't have a signature scent, I have several that I wear depending on my mood. My favourites though, are Eau d'Issey and Polo Sport for Women (though I often steal Mr. Jazz's Polo)...

But those are probably too light and citrusy for you...

  10. Girl, you let me know when you find something, because my last two favorites were your last two favorites! So, I gotta love whatever you pick out next. And since we live so far apart we can where the same thing.

  11. Mom and I both like Thierry Mugler's Angel, but I really prefer Alien by the same maker. It's unusual, and not real girly.

Have you ever tried Donna Karan Cashmere Mist?

  13. Probably my "signature" scent would be Estee Lauder "Knowing" but I also like Hermes Caleche, Guerlain Mitsouko, Chanel 19, and Lucky #6. Sometimes I've worn Guerlain L'Heure Bleu, though that's a little strong for me, and occasionally Estee Lauder Youth Dew because it reminds me of my grandmother. You're welcome to try what I have if you want.

I really like Donna Karan Cashmere Mist - it's not fruity or old ladyish. Very pretty scent!

    Good luck!

I agree with the recommendation of Bulgari's Au The Vert. Heck, I have a bottle of the cologne concentration that I've only used a few times; I'd be willing to let you have it. :-)

Have you tried Sarah Jessica Parker's newest fragrance, Covet? It's been described as a "fougere on estrogen", which means it's a feminization of a usually masculine scent genre.

  16. My signature scent would have to be: 360 by Perry Ellis and Eternity Moment by Calvin Klein...

I have tons of perfumes...but I'm usually stuck with those two...as for suggesting one...I really don't know...

I normally wear Chanel No. 19, but I also (now don't think I'm too weird) like to wear Paco Rabanne by Paco Rabanne, it's for men, but I just love it.

  20. I wear Anick Goutal L'hadrian, which I love. It's citrusy and clean and not too strong. Fortunately, a friend showed up with a gift of it one day when I ran out. You might want to check out an apothecary that mixes natural oils - that way you can find a scent that is just right for you!

Don't worry about stealing someone else's signature scent. Perfume is one of those things that changes depending upon your body chemistry. That's why you know within a few minutes of trying it whether you "love" it or not. I might love the scent on someone else and hate it on myself. Personally, I'm a classic Channel no. 5 girl when I can afford it!

An interesting tool for picking out a new fragrance is The Fragrance Finder on Sephora's website. It used to be even more interactive, where you could pick out the scent you like already and they would give you suggestions, but I guess keeping up with the hundreds of releases per year was too much.

  27. I used to wear candies and a couple of years ago it went discontinued. So now that I've used up everything I bought in a panic I had the same dilemma.
Then my sister bought me "Sex And The City - Love" for Christmas; and I love it! It's nice for during the day and a night out.
