I think I'm going crazy in the head

Warning: Boxed noodles from a kit look nothing like this.

I'm counting calories lately. I got home late tonight, wanted an easy meal, and pulled out one of those japanese noodle kits. The box says it's 320 calories per serving. There are 3 servings in the box.

I know very well that I can eat 3 servings of noodles. 960 calories! Holy crap!

So I pulled out approximately 1/3 of the noodles, and cooked only that much.

Brilliant, I'm brilliant!

Only I forgot about my brilliancy.

I had morphed into Rainman, reciting "960 calories, definitely 960 calories. K-mart sucks."

I worried so much that when the noodles were prepared, I split out 1/3 of them for my serving.

Sadly, again thinking that I was brilliant.

I threw the rest away, so as not to even be tempted by them.

"960 calories for one meal my ass! Take THAT!" I yelled, triumphantly, as I arranged sliced cucumbers, prettily, around my noodles.

And I walked around mumbling to myself after dinner, "THAT was one serving of noodles? No WONDER I've put on weight! I'm a glutton! I'm disgusting! Next they'll tell me a serving of meat should be the size of a deck of cards..."

And then, of course, when I did the dishes, I found the remaining 2 servings of dry noodles sitting on the counter. I only ate 1/3 of 1/3 of the box! Yayyyy!

I'm hungry.

The reason those instant noodles are so fattening is because the noodles are deep fat fried. If you made your own Japanese noodle soup at home and you loaded up your bowl with spinach, green onions, mushrooms, and carrots you’d get to eat more and it would be better for you.

  3. There is no way I could NOT have eaten the whole box ... I do better with avoiding all together than trying to eat a "portion" ... and I wonder why I am overweight?!?!?

  4. Gamera: Yeah, we'll see how long I can stick to my conscientious program!

Larry: Doh! Good one, wish I'd thought of it for a title.

AZ: I love to make japanese udon noodles soup; I'll add spinach next time, and I usually add mixed seafood that you get at the asian grocer! Yum!

  5. Nancy: That's why I threw the rest away. I WILL got back for seconds...but not if they're in the garbage can...unless they're at the very top, and not touching anything gross, I mean.

  8. Hilarious! What a way to diet!

    I bet you WERE hungry...

I would've scarfed the whole box down. Smart thinking to not prepare the whole thing.

  9. I'm always doing things like that - force of habit and distraction - but not with food. I keep flushing the toilet after I wash my hands forgetting I did it before; loading toothpaste onto the brush straight after I finsh brushing my teeth; or turning the light off when I walk into a room if someone else has already left it on.

At least it's erring on the side of caution: when you start cooking twice the normall amount because you forgot you ate already - that's when you need to start worrying!

  11. I hate when I think a package is one serving only to find out that it is one and a half or two serving (or worse three!). If I buy a package I want to eat the whole package.

Lately I've been eating a whole package of frozen veggies and then I have a little meat. Veggies are way fewer in calories and they are very filling (not satisfying but filling).

  12. yay! are you still hungry? at least it was calculating not enough rather than too much (the too-much is my "subconscious" trick).
