Ah, the midwest. Corn, corn, corn, corn, beans, corn, corn, corn. Some find it terribly tiresome. Dull. Still, there are days, like today, when the view is quite scenic.

  1. It reminds me of home.

  2. I remember that area from the mid-50's when we lived at RANTOUL (sp?) AFB.

Picking sweet corn at just the right moment. Shucking it and tossing the ears into a big pot of boiling water. Then layering on fresh, I mean REALLY FRESH, homemade butter. A meal in and of itself, and it often was.

    BTW - Beautiful rainbow.

  4. Neal: The scenery's similar in Indiana, isn't it? I'll fed-ex some sweet corn to you.

Jackt: I imagine Iowa and Illinois sweet corn taste much the same; it's all awesome. I'm convinced it tastes better if you buy it off the back of a pickup truck.

Wil: Chanute AFB was still open when I was running the streets as a teen (and flirting with the flyboys at the roller rink). It's a lot of wasted space now, but they're trying to restore and revive. Hope they can turn that community around.

Your description of our corn has made me hungry for it--at breakfast!

Amishlaw: Wow, thanks! I'm chomping at the bit for a "good" camera...soon.

Remember when YM grew sweet corn behind the office...he'd box it up and mail it to clients on the east coast? And he'd stand by the door and say, "take some corn home with you, no, take more than that, and take one of these 8 ft. zucchinis, take two..."

  8. The Iowa crops look nice and green. Kansas is looking very dry! Even the wheat is not waving in golden glory this year. Quick someone do a rain dance!

  9. Beautiful pics!

Even with the rain - yesterday was a nice day.

  10. I stand corrected!!

    It was Chanute AFB.

Having lived in 42 states and 12 countries by the time I graduated (3 different schools in 3 different states my senior year) high school, they have blended together after all this time.

  11. MaryP: The rainbow was gorgeous; a double one, and it lasted forever. Glad I happened to be out and about when it showed up.

KM: The cornfield out back has transformed into a nice garden, and tomatoes are the vegetable of choice now. Can hardly wait!

Jodie: We got a good soaking yesterday, on and off all day long. Needed it here too.

Momo: It was a weird, very sunny rainy day.

Wil: You had it right, Chanute AFB is in Rantoul, IL. That's a lot of moving around. Here's my life: 1963-1965: San Diego, CA; 1965-present: Champaign, IL. You lived in more places in one year than I did my entire life.
